NEW YORK — The most deadly city in the U.S. is New Orleans, but its safer than many other major cities, according to a new report from the U-S.
Department of Homeland Security.
The DHS said New Orleans had the highest violent crime rate among major American cities in the first quarter of 2021, up 12% from the same quarter in 2020.
New Orleans had 1,564 violent crimes, compared to 1,092 for Baltimore and 1,019 for Milwaukee.
But the report said New York was second in violent crime for the same period, up from 1,008 for Baltimore.
It said the number of murders in New York increased by 25% from 8,843 in 2020 to 9,087 in 2021.
The homicide rate in New Orleans declined by 12%, from 7,904 in 2020, the report noted.
The number of homicides dropped to a record low in 2021, the highest in more than 30 years.
The New York City Police Department said it would provide a breakdown of the data by year, but said the numbers were preliminary.
The department declined to release the full report.
